SIMPLE PATCHWORK BLOCK
A SIMPLE PATCHWORK BLOCK - THE NINE PATCH BLOCK
The most basic of designs - a square can be built into a very effective design.
The reason a square is easy to sew is that both the warp and the weft of the fabric are
cut parallel with the shape of the patch. This means that there is strength on all the
edges of the patch or, looking at it the other way, the edges of the patch should not be
too stretchy.
This makes it fairly easy to fit the edge of one square to the edge of the next square.
If you take squares in two different colours and alternate them together to make a larger
block of 9 squares this will form a 9 patch block.
You can then make a number of nine patch blocks and use them with sashing to make a quilt
top.
Remember a simple design executed well can be very effective.
