Patch Work
Patchwork is the word normally used for the creative past time of patch work or pieced work. It originated with people gathering together and joining scraps of material to form what we now know as a patchwork quilt. The word may be hyphenated as patch-work, written as two words - patch work or simply as we normally write it - patchwork.
Originally the small pieces of cloth were sewn together to form a larger piece of work and it was very much a communal activity with all the women gathering to work on one quilt. It was an economic way of producing something useful and out of that activity grew the various different patterns and styles of patchworking.
