Patchwork pieces may be joined by machine or hand. Traditionally the scraps of cotton fabric were sewn together by hand and this method is still used. Use a Sharps needle and join using a fine running stitch or very neat back stitch to join patches together.
If sewing together shapes such as fabric wrapped over hexagonal papers, with right sides together use a very neat whipping stitch allowing the papers to be removed after stitching.
Patchwork designs with longer strips such as log cabin and courthouse steps are easy to construct by machine. Make sure you either use a quarter inch piecing foot or mark your machine with some insulating tape to act as a guide to give an exact finished seam of quarter of an inch. Slightly shorten you stitch length from standard sewing to give a neat and accurate seam to secure your patched pieces.
